More Information
Tutoring helps your child by offering personalised support tailored to their needs. Unlike working in a class of 30 students at school, tutoring is normally delivered in small groups or privately (1-to-1 lessons) that is catered to the needs of your child. This individualised approach can boost their confidence and improve their grades.
Tutors also teach effective study habits, time management, and test preparation strategies, which leads to better academic performance. They offer specialised learning for both advanced and struggling students, helping them either excel further or catch up with their peers.
Overall, tutoring enhances understanding, builds confidence, and develops good study routines, helping your child achieve their full academic potential.
In-person learning generally offers more benefits than online learning, especially for younger students. It allows students to interact directly with teachers and classmates, creating a more engaging and supportive environment. The immediate feedback and hands-on activities in classrooms help students understand and remember material better. The structured classroom setting also helps students stay focused and disciplined.
Online learning is flexible and convenient but often lacks the personal interaction that many students need. Home environments can be comforting and relaxing, but can also be distracting, and younger students may struggle to stay motivated without a teacher present.
NAPLAN (National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy) is a standardized test in Australia that assesses students’ skills in literacy and numeracy. It is taken by students in Years 3, 5, 7, and 9 to measure how well they are developing these essential skills compared to national standards.
The subjects covered include reading, writing, language conventions and numeracy.
NAPLAN tests are held annually, typically in May, and results are released later in the year.
A selective high school in New South Wales (NSW) is a public school that caters to academically gifted and talented students. These schools offer a more challenging curriculum and aim to help students reach their academic potential by providing a stimulating learning environment.
There are two types of selective high schools: fully selective high schools (where all students are selected based on academic ability) and partially selective high schools (where only certain classes are selective).
Students who want to be in a selective high, will need to take the Selective High School Placement Test in Year 6. The test includes Reading, Mathematical Reasoning, Thinking Skills and Writing. The test will take about 3 hours.
Selective high schools are highly competitive and sought after by families because they offer an enriched academic experience.
The Opportunity Class (OC) in New South Wales (NSW) is a specialised class for academically gifted students in Years 5 and 6. These classes provide an advanced curriculum that challenges students and helps them develop their academic potential in preparation for future studies, including selective high school.
Students who want to be in an OC program will need to take the Opportunity Class Placement Test in Year 4. The test includes Reading, Mathematical Reasoning and Thinking Skills. The test will take about 2 hours.
OC classes are available in selected public schools across NSW, and entry is highly competitive due to limited spots.
Scholarships are award by independent or private high schools. The award is based on academic achievement and talent in sports or the arts. Students who want a scholarship will need to apply to the individual school and sit a scholarship test. Students who excel in the test will be invited to an interview at the school.
Many independent schools use the ACER scholarship test which includes 2 Writing Tasks, Humanities (comprehension) and Mathematics. As a guide, your child should be performing 1-2 grades above their current grade in both English and Maths to be a competitive candidate for scholarships.
